A Heritage Interpretation Plan for Lawrence Heights
Client
Toronto Community Housing Corporation and Heights Development Inc.
Location
Toronto
Duration
2014-2015
Lawrence Heights is a large public housing project with 3,500 residents in 1,208 rent-geared-to income units in North Toronto. The area is undergoing a revitalization process that will result in a mix of 6,000 social and market housing units and 14,000 residents. In collaboration with residents and through an extensive process of community engagement, GPA prepared a Heritage Interpretation Plan that documents the unique history, rich social fabric and distinct identity of Lawrence Heights. The Heritage Interpretation Plan identifies how elements that carry significance to residents can be remembered and preserved as change takes place in the area. The plan provides a road map for identifying and communicating key historic, cultural and social references and identifies options to integrate these elements as distinguishing features of the revitalized neighbourhood.
In addition to preparing the Heritage Interpretation Plan, GPA also worked on the Lawrence Heights Development Plan and Phase 1 Implementation process.
