Air Quality Case Studies

GPA prepared case studies on the integration of air quality concerns into the land use planning and development process for the Public Health Department of the Region of Peel. In particular, the Region wanted to find examples of the use of planning tools and powers to implement two air quality policies: assessing the air quality implications of proposed development (both as individual developments and their contribution to cumulative impacts); and supporting the development of local municipal official plan policies addressing air quality. Case studies focused on approaches taken by leading jurisdictions in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Preliminary research reviewed existing policies, discussion papers, guidelines and other literature. This initial research was followed up with key informant interviews that moved the case study analysis beyond a description of the approach under study, to identify critical success factors in implementation and better assess suitability in the Peel context.
