Yonge-Steeles Corridor Secondary Plan Study
Client
City of Vaughan
Location
Vaughan
Duration
2008-2010
GPA members were part of a consulting team led by IBI Group preparing a land use, urban design and transportation study for the Yonge Street corridor between Steeles Avenue and Highway 7. This portion of Yonge street is a regional road being considered for significant transit upgrades, including the potential extension of the Yonge Street subway. The transformation of Yonge Street in this area from single storey, single use buildings and vehicular dominance to mixed use intensification with pedestrian prioritization requires a comprehensive planning approach which includes the integration of land use and zoning, urban design, public realm and transportation components. This study explored how intensification will help to create a vibrant complete community. GPA participated in all aspects of the study and prepared the secondary plan framework and draft zoning by-law for the area. The final product of the study was a set of Secondary Plan policies that were adopted by Council in September 2010.
